Frankly, you don't even have to deny service to affect a lot of private bloggers--attacks that increase their bandwidth usage would be as unwelcome to many as a full-on denial might be. After all, it doesn't cost you extra hosting fees when your blog goes down.

Alec - blog spammers have outgunned him 275 to 1

[Blog.DanYork.com] It's nice to see someone keeping all those stats and then providing them. We've been using Akismet over at Voice of VOIPSA as well and it has worked fantastically, but I've been deleting all the blog spam now and then, so I don't have any great way to keep a record like this.

[moeffju.net] The nofollow attribute hasn’t done any good as far as I can see - the link spam has, if anything, grown, search engine’s results haven’t grown noticeably better. Instead, even legitimate links (in posts or comments) are stripped of their Google juice.

Odd Referrers

[Security Watch - Powered by vBulletin] I don't know if there was a bot out on a test run, or shielding itself, or what it was doing, but I got a sudden explosion of obviously invalid referrers on one of my sites on Saturday or Sunday. If they were for commercial sites, I'd see the spam, but they also include a few personal sites and blogs.

What is with the trackback spam?

[StillSecure, After All These Years] Over the last week or so I have been getting hit hard with trackback spam. All the usual suspects, sites pushing medicine, rape pictures and all sorts of other unsavory stuff. I don't get what these people are hoping to accomplish. Typepad, which hosts my account has trackback and comment spam filters. No trackbacks or comments are approved for the site without my approval. I am obviously not approving any of this crap. So what is the use? Am I missing something? I just keep adding IP's to banned list. I would be interested if anyone else is having this problem. I am determined not to turn off trackbacks, as that would give these characters to much credit...
