Google Sites Jumps the rel=nofollow Shark

Kevin Burton's NEW FeedBloghttp://feedblog.org/2008/02/28/google-sites-jumps-the-relnofollow-shark/ [Kevin Burton's NEW FeedBlog] I’m glad Kevin is saying nofollow is not the web (outside of the blogs and comments it was designed for) and in this world view you can only give Google Juice and it doesn’t give back. Such a view and action only favors those in a dominant network position.

Are You Noticing An Increase In Blogspam Too?

The Blog Heraldhttp://www.blogherald.com/2007/11/01/are-you-noticing-an-increase-in-blogspam-too/ [The Blog Herald] Bottom line is that no matter what the reason why blogspammers are doing what they’re doing, the current practice I’ve adopted is that if it looks like blogspam, smells like blogspam, and acts like blogspam, then it gets deleted like blogspam. In this particular case, the current practice here is that if I see a whole bunch of comments that look the same, they get put in the same bin.

Trackback Spam

[Steve's Scribbles] I’ve been using the Wordpress Gatekeeper plugin for a while so I wouldn’t get comment spam. It stopped spam cold for a while, but what I didn’t realize is that it fails to stop Trackback spam”¦ I just happened to check my comments list ...

Comment on Akismet False Positives & Spam Karma Configuration by ...

Comments for Andy Beard - Niche Marketinghttp://andybeard.eu/2007/05/akismet-spam-karma.html#comment-192707 [Comments for Andy Beard - Niche Marketing] Well, I started with Spam Karma and was happy with until one bad day came - my hosting provider closed my account because it was using too much of CPU resources, mostly because of DB queries generated by spambots and Spam Karma fighting them. Changing the hosting company isn't an easy task, especially when you want to get you site running again - I had to get rid of Spam Karma and switch to Akismet.

Spam Karma

Smithology[Smithology] A few people have hinted that it is difficult to get their comments onto the blog and perhaps it is spam karma causing trouble. There are a few things it does like making it harder to comment on old posts, treating you with suspicion if you haven’t commented before (and it keeps a score of your previous karma so once it gets into it’s head that you’re a spammer it can be hard to convince it otherwise) as well as the usual checks for spammy words, super fast commenting etc…

Hello webmaster: Coping with clever spam

Walt at Random[Walt at Random] For the rest, there’s Spam Karma 2, which continues to do great work. As far as I can tell, no more than about one spamment (spam comment) makes it through to the blog itself every month, maybe not that many–and I rescue legitimate comments from the spam list about as often (maybe once a month–usually for having too many links).

Google Groups Comment Spam

Andy Beard - Niche Marketinghttp://andybeard.eu/2008/02/google-groups-comment-spam.html [Andy Beard - Niche Marketing] Due to all the spam, Google.com ends up on my domain blacklist, and a single URL occurrence will still allow it to be visible within my standard settings for comment moderation, as long there are no other specific penalties imposed by Spam Karma.

How I built an effective blog comment spam blocker

Snook.cahttp://snook.ca/archives/other/effective_blog_comment_spam_blocker/ [Snook.ca] I have been looking for a method to block comment spam for a while, and though my developer partner and I have had some success, it is relatively limited. Our new CMS, Ministry(Starter), will have an Akismet plug-in, but it would be nice to have an in house system too.

Using IPTables to Block Referer Spam

[SteamedPenguin - Not Your Usual Meal] While I know that referrer spam is a fact of life for anybody hosting a website, I hate seeing my logs filled with crap. Being proactive about this log-jacking is hard, but I like doing something about it anyway.

The new wave of HTTP referrer spam

Brandon Checketts[Brandon Checketts] I would argue that the real intent of these spammers is to get the website owner who is looking at the stats, to click on their links. Most users who have a blog or small website check their statistics often, and are really interested when they find a new site that appears to be linking to theirs.
