This Android Life » Blog Archive » Organised spam campaign riddles ...
[This Android Life] Some of our readership out there may be players or ex-players of Pocket Empires, a pretty popular medievil themed empire building game in which players can get ahead quicker by donating money for gems. We’ve never played it ourselves as none of us here are keen on the pay for resources model, but we’ve heard very good things about the game. Sadly, though, many of our readers (particularly those who are developers who have published apps to the market) will be more familiar with Pocket Empires through the sheer volume spam comments related to the game that have been appearing under completely unrelated games over the last few days. That, in itself, is bad enough, but what if the developer had actually been encouraging users to spam by rewarding them with in-game resources? Well, sadly, that’s an allegation that’s being made by a number of members of the development community, who are accusing Pocket Play, the developers of Pocket Empires, of offering it’s playerbase gems in exchange for leaving Pocket Empire related comments in the Android Market.

No Follow Links | Search Engine Optimization Blog
[Search Engine Optimization Blog] Google has began using the no follow links as a machine readable revelation for paid links and therefore keeping them from gaining any credibility in the search engines results. The web owners are still debating over whether or hurting them as many pages are paying for links to be traded on their site in hopes of raising their page rank.

Greek spammers email addresses blacklist | Into.the.Void.
[Into.the.Void.] Thanks for the reply Jeremy, you are not wrong about blacklisting email addresses in general, but this blacklist has a very specific target, “greek spammers”. And I can tell you that it’s quite effective, since most of them use the same From: addresses over and over to send their “newsletters”.

Spammers And Spam Hunters
[Global Internet Marketing Articles WebSite] They have locked me out of one of my own blogs and one I manage for a client because their spambot said it might be spam. It also says that if you are a human reading this message then of course I am not likely a spambot and they will correct the situation.

Blog spam is out of control!
[Balfes.net] Not sure where to begin with this one but I want to let my readers know the pain and suffering I go through each day. If it wasn’t for the fact I have a WordPress application on my iPhone and marking comments as spam is as easy as a single click I think I would just kill the site. I am now getting 5-20 spam posts a day on this site and I even have a basic spam control on the comment form. I could log into the actual site each day and click the spam button on each of these but I like just doing it on my iPhone as soon as I see a comment. The one thing I do not want is these people getting any hits or clicks from my site so deleting them as soon as possible is imperative. I guess this is just “business as usual” as a site becomes more popular, I can’t imagine how bad this is for really popular sites!

Hacker News | Ask HN: 2 karma minimum to lock out spam bots
[Hacker News] There are actually already spambots that do this on reddit -- they find a highly-voted comment in a reddit thread, follow the link to the article and repost the comment there (filling in the URL they want if the site in question allows it). Unless you look carefully at what people claim as "their site", or happen to read reddit as well, they can be hard to catch.

Should I Use NoFollow On Affiliate Links?
[SEO Rankings] I don’t actively sell links on this blog, and when anyone has contacted me to add a DoFollow link to their website through a product reveiw or similar, for compensation, I have denied. In some cases, if they had a product that I felt might be a good fit for my readers, I have offered to let them write a guest post with a DoFollow link as long as the post was informational and not promotional, and the links complimented their message.
