Turning Off Blog Comments

Keith Hill's Bloghttp://keithhill.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!5A8D2641E0963A97!6656.entry [Keith Hill's Blog] I’ve had enough of the comment spam and I ain’t taking it no more.  I’ve been wasting too much time deleting (using Live Spaces rather lame blog management UI) comment spam.  I’ve seen enough “Wow gold” and “cheap laptop battery” from a certain region of the world to last me for a life time.  To those few, in that region, who abuse this wonderful medium, may your hard drive’s heads gouge deeply into each platter and your CPUs melt into a pile of silicon junk.  Somedays don’t you wish there was a *69 equivalent for the internet?  :-)

A Referrer Spam Anecdote

StraightSecTalkhttp://www.straightsectalk.com/?p=45 [StraightSecTalk] Spam, be it e-mail, referer or another style, typically operates and gains success due to saturation. Instead of some spammer thinking “i’ll target kevin’s blog with this domain”, they target tens of thousands of domains in hopes the admin checks the site out of curiosity, or in case they make their logs available in some fashion.

Damn Blog Spam filters are a pain in the ass!

Untitledhttp://homeoftheuninspired.wordpress.com/2008/05/11/damn-blog-spam-filters-are-a-pain-in-the-ass/ [Untitled] Dave’s Spam Karma 2 is the main one I am railing against because it is used on one of my favourite blogs (Bad Astronomy) and EVERY DAMN COMMENT I MAKE is deemed SPAM. Maybe it’s because I use the Nickname I use on this blog .

Hello webmaster: Coping with clever spam

Walt at Random[Walt at Random] For the rest, there’s Spam Karma 2, which continues to do great work. As far as I can tell, no more than about one spamment (spam comment) makes it through to the blog itself every month, maybe not that many–and I rescue legitimate comments from the spam list about as often (maybe once a month–usually for having too many links).

Referral spam

[jforsythe.com : weblog] It works on the principal that Technorati scrubs web and blog content in order to find links back to your content and thereby become the intermediary provider of 'approved referrals'. They hardly scan the known Web let alone the unknown, but I suppose it is better than the raw spammy world that exists today.

Comment Spam on the rise

[Miles’ Blog - Thoughts and errata from Miles Burke.] As with email spamming and Usenet spamming in the nineties, blog comment spamming is on the rise as more people get easier access to the tools, and more lists of blogs, etc are made available. I haven’t seen statistical evidence, but I would assume the effectiveness of the actual spam, and the spams actually getting through to recipients or blog comment areas are in a reverse curve to these broadcast statistics, as more and more software tools for each style and type of spam get released.

Trackbacks Are Dead

http://rabidpaladin.com [ The Rabid Paladin] This can lead to an unwanted side-effect by leaving your blog much more open to another Internet dirty trick--denial of service attacks. Frankly, you don't even have to deny service to affect a lot of private bloggers--attacks that increase their bandwidth usage would be as unwelcome to many as a full-on denial might be. After all, it doesn't cost you extra hosting fees when your blog goes down.

Alec - blog spammers have outgunned him 275 to 1

http://dyork.livejournal.com [Blog.DanYork.com] It's nice to see someone keeping all those stats and then providing them. We've been using Akismet over at Voice of VOIPSA as well and it has worked fantastically, but I've been deleting all the blog spam now and then, so I don't have any great way to keep a record like this.
