Targeting Spam > Comment Section
[Based On A True Story] I am a happy person. I used to get between 100-300 spam comments/trackbacks on my website a day, and then at 3am last night I got absolutely sick of them and figured out how to implement a hack called Captcha into my blog which makes anyone leaving comments have to write down numbers they see (like blogger). Today is my first day probably since I started blogging that I haven't had one spam attack. Tags Technorati : Captcha Spam...

[IT: Instructional Technology] CAPTCHA and the Non-Standard User: These CAPTCHA images reduce fraudulent accounts used for spam, spreading malware and engaging various other nasty practices. A Capcha is an image of a few characters (letters and numbers) without actual meaning, that are deliberately distorted so that a human is usually capable of deciphering them, but a piece of software is not.
[Digital Inspiration: Technology News, Software Downloads, Reviews, Productivity Tips] Google introduces Vocal Captcha for Blind Users: If you can't read (or don't want to read) that cryptic letter CAPTCHA, Google has launched an alternat Audio CAPTCHA as part of their word-verification process. Users can click the accessibility wheel chair icon and it spells out some numbers.
[Just So You Know... - A repository of my thoughts, my views, my take on life] Blogger Admits Faulty Algorithm: In the announcement on Blogger Buzz regarding this issue, they claim that false positives is very low and they are working on reducing such incidents by improving their systems. [Spam.weblogsinc.com] The Spam Weblog: He indicates that combating blog spam faces many of the same challenges currently plaguing the email world in its own struggle against spam, and goes on to posit that "many will want to take advantage of filtering services in much the same way that mail users see value in spam filters for their email inbox." I imagine the first item on VeriSign's agenda will be to shore up the infrastructure of Weblogs.com, currently struggling under the weight of upwards of two million pings per day — but I, for one, will welcome the efforts of our splog-fighting overlords once they put some weight behind it —
[Buzz.blogger.com] Blogger Buzz: Spam Barriers (Redux): However, as I mentioned earlier, with any automatic classification of spam there will be some legitimate content that gets classified incorrectly.
[Geektronica.com] The Republic of Geektronica » Blog Archive » The Strange World of ...: I’d propose the counter-suggestion of having a script at some URL that takes as input the referer field, so anytime you land on a spam blog, you just go to that bookmarked URL and it sees the last page you visited and logs it as a potential spam blog. The script could easily either automatically send you back to that page, or provide you with a button to go back if you want, or a “next blog”
