Targeting Spam > New Type Of Spam - Referral Spam
[Connected Internet News | Broadband Mobile Gaming News] In my meeting with Kim she told me about a new type of spam which at the moment blogware are calling referral spam. Basically this is where spammers link to your website in the hope that when you check out your referral stats you will click on the link to see who they are.

[Atypical Homeschool.net - for eclectic homeschoolers everywhere] Spam Irony: In some of the other posts where I talked about comment spammers, people have left comments wondering why they do it or why go to so much effort for so little gain. The hope of comment spam is to raise the spammer’s site in the search engine ranks by having links to the site on as many web sites as possible.
[Miss Zoot] I think I have a blog demon.: I'm so terribly confused about this because there are no weird referrals showing up (if a mega-popular site linked to me and my traffic jumped, I'd see it on the referral logs). Also, there are no high number searches to report (my traffic jumped when hurricane Ivan hit, but there was a trail of "hurricane ivan" google searches to explain it).
[Manimalia] Commentariat Update: Movable type does a site-allows-comments-check before the comments receiver (mt-comments.cgi) will operate. By turning on site comments, the spammers just navigate through your sitemap and push spam into the comments receiver (the bastards) MT will kill the comment if not allowed in the post, or it will save the comment and complete its normal posting checks.

[Dennis Forbes - Pragmatic Software Development] Google Oddities - Active Visits Affecting Search... : Like most people with a website, I regularly check the stats to see how things are going: How many people visited today? Where did they come from? How many times have the search engines sent someone my way? These are metrics that I use to know if I'm hitting internal goals, and allow me to alter plans when things head in the wrong direction (If I lose readers, I'll just have to make up some story about Google buying Digg and then duking it out with Microsoft Reddit Live!

[Underscorebleach.net] Proposal on referrer spam: The reason I suggest that the spam analysis not be done at HTTP request time is that if external blacklists (whether DNSBLs, XML-RPC-based, or otherwise) are to be queried, this could slow down the response of the Web server significantly. It would be a problem particularly if such an anti-referrer spam system were widely adopted and the blacklist's server was getting hammered (or was the target of a DoS).
[Invision-graphics.com] Referral Spam: As Invision-Graphics updates the Referal Spam - you too are protected with the same security. This is why we made Referral Spam a commnuity effort, each registered user can activley partake and help keep Referral Spam up to date by, submitting abusive referral spam url's, spam referral ip's or contribute to the bad word filter.
[Blogd.com] The Blog From Another Dimension: New Spam Type May Destroy Blog ...: As for the distorted-text registration system, not only does it present yet another level of hoops for regular people to jump through, that also is defeatable--someone I read in a spam discussion presented the idea that porn spammers could easily set up software that, when presented with that text test, would simply copy the image and present it to one of the multitudes of surfers constantly hitting the free porn pages, requiring them to solve it to see the free porn. The software would then take the answer back to the blog, input the data, and get by that level of security.
